Hello: I am James Dean, and I am running for the Commission Seat 2 of Lynn Haven. I am married, have two children, and am retired from education after serving for 30 years. My wife and I are members of the First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven.

I grew up in Bay County, attending Drummond Park Elementary, Jinks Junior High, and Bay County High. I earned my A.A. Degree from Gulf Coast Junior College, B.S. from FSU, and M.Ed. from West Georgia College. Between high school and college, I worked for Fisher-Stinson Hardware and Van Kleeck Hardware in Lynn Haven.

Several years ago I became interested in city politics from having witnessed two events, in as many years, in which neighborhoods had expressed their concerns to the City Commission over proposed development in their immediate vicinity. The Commission voted down the first proposal, and the second motion died for lack of a second. Each proposal was passed at a later date when there was no one to represent either neighborhood. I feel that a bond of trust was compromised by this action of the Commission. If development was essential, then a solution should have resulted in the developer and the community working together to the satisfaction of both parties.

As a resident of the historic area, I applaud the efforts of the present Commission in establishing the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). I would look forward to the continued planning by identifying the styles of homes in the CRA, codes for renovation of old homes and construction of new homes, and the appointing of a citizens' board to formulate criteria and provide evaluation and recommendations to maintain the historic integrity of Lynn Haven.

The various boards of the City are comprised of interested citizens who devote their time and energy giving specific attention to details, ordinances, and analyses when presenting their recommendations. As a Commissioner, I would give strong adherence to their recommendations.

Ordinances, like our United States Constitution, were passed during rational periods of our City's history to guide us through the emotional-irrational moments. They should not be cast aside with every "conflict of interest", but only through thoughtful wisdom.

I am concerned about the City's thirty-one million dollar ($31,000,000) debt and the annexing of large areas beyond our means to supply services, which again would demand increasing our indebtedness.

My desire is to be a representative of the people, a spokesman for the people, and always a listener to the people.

As stated in section 106.011(14), F.S. the candidates running for State, Multicounty, District or Judical office must file with the Department of State Division of Elections, click here for a link to the Division of Elections.
