| Comments : | James E. McCalister, Sr. is a native of Hahira, Georgia. He has been a resident of Panama City, (Bay County) since 1976.
He and his wife Maria have three children; all three graduated from Rutherford High School. They are also the proud grandparents of Trey, age 9, and twins Alyssa and Alex, age 7.
Mr. McCalister is a 1968 graduate of Westside High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Florida A&M University in 1972 and a Master of Science degree from the University of West Florida in Administration and Supervision in 1984. Currently, Mr. McCalister is a doctoral candidate at the University of West Florida, also in the area of Administation and Supervision.
Mr. McCalister's 31 years of experience includes: former teacher, coach, and principal; he began his career at Marianna High School in 1973 as a teacher and coach. In 1976 he moved to Panama City and began working at Rutherford High School until 1984.
Additionally, he has served as an interim assistant principal at Rutherford High School, and assistant principal at Everitt Middle School from 1984 – 1990. Mr. McCalister, crossing the span of ten years, has served as principal of both Springfield Elementary School and Jinks Middle School from 1990- 2000.
Mr. McCalister was elected as Superintendent of Bay District Schools in November of 2000. He is completing his first term as Superintendent of Bay District Schools while seeking re-election.
His mantra: “I have a weakness for children and a passion for Public Education.”
