Comments :

I grew up in Panama City Beach and have raised my children here. It has been a wonderful place to raise a family. Now it’s my children's turn to raise their children in our community and I want to insure it holds the same opportunity for them as it did for me. I feel that since I have no affiliation to either the tourist oriented businesses nor to any political action group, I can keep my decisions free from bias and make decisions that benefit Panama City Beach as a whole. I've been working for our community as a member of different civic clubs for many years. My community activity nurtured my belief that if you work with others for the betterment of the community with no regard of personal gain or achievement, great things can be done. I also feel that one needs to know and understand the history of Panama City Beach and where this city has risen from in order to better understand how to guide the growth that the city is currently undergoing. There are those who want to keep their feet in the past while others want to step into the future. I believe it’s better to keep one foot in the past while moving the other foot slowly into the future. Only when sure footing is found in the future can the second foot be brought forward. Caution needs to be heeded since once you move ahead, the steps cannot be retracted. Each decision must be weighed on its own merit; and there can never be a blanket policy that can cover all aspects of the future. An open mind is needed in order to be fair to all.

Having spent most of my youth and adult life in our city, I feel that I have the personal knowledge of the Beach and a sense of the history of Panama City Beach which other candidates lack. This is my home, as it is Patti’s, and the home of our children and now, their children. I want to be a part of the process that will make this beautiful beach city a place that all coming generations can be proud to call their home. My feelings for the city, my community activities and my civic positions make me the best candidate for this LEADERSHIP position. I have been DEDICATED to Panama City Beach in the past and I'm DEDICATED to the future of Panama City Beach.

Biography of Ken "Capt Ken" Nelson

My parents purchased their first home in Laguna Beach in 1956 and moved here permanently in 1966, enrolling me into the local school system. I graduated from Bay High in 1970 and shortly after, I began my studies at Gulf Coast Community College majoring in Business Administration. An illness in the family forced me to pull out of Gulf Coast Community College in 1972 to help in the family landscaping business. I worked in landscaping until 1977 when the opportunity to work with the Panama City Beach Police Department presented itself.

In 1981, another opportunity opened up in the maritime field. Being a seaman at heart, I regretfully left the Panama City Beach Police Department, after achieving the position of Watch Commander, to pursue my love of the sea. To this day, I have fond memories of my brief career with the Police Department. Using the Coast Guard Master's license that I earned in 1975, I was employed by Clipper Fleet in the position of Captain with the job of running crews and supplies to the offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

This position was short lived as I was to become a father for the second time and the responsibility of family was difficult to fulfill being constantly on call and on the move with a marine company. My second child was born in 1982 and that was the same year I started my own business along with my best friend, my wife, Patti. The business thrives today as Nelson Marine Service on Thomas Dr. Nelson Marine Service has been serving our community for over 21 years.
