Comments :

I, George Smith am seeking reelection this spring. I defend the creation of an ad valorem tax during my second term as Commissioner. I consider the millage rate necessary and a display of leadership. There was talk of 3.5% mills but we held it down to 2% mills because I knew that we had growth and an increase in property values.

We have saved this city money by contracting with the Bay County Sheriff's Office rather than trying to staff our own police department. Stormwater runoff is one of the things that we need to move quickly on to keep citizens from experiencing water in their homes.

I am very optimistic about Callaway's potential for economic growth. Because growth is inevitable and Callaway can grow all the way to the Gulf County line we must carefully and responsibly manage that growth. I would like to see businesses such as Home Depot and Lowe's come to our area. Also, a regional high school on the east side of Bay County that would serve the growing population in this area because that is where the growth is today.

I am retired from the U.S. Air Force and am a Vietnam veteran and I have successfully owned and operated George H. Smith Real Estate since 1979. My civic involvement includes 10 years as trustee at GCCC, United Way Board of Directors, Red Cross Board of Directors, GCCC Foundation Member, Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I have also served on both the Bay County and Callaway Planning Boards. I am a member and trustee of St. John's Missionary Baptist Church.

I have lived in Callaway since 1975 with my wife Maureen of 51 years. Together we have raised 4 children and we have 12 grandchildren. I do not consider myself a politician. I enjoy being a voice for the people of the City of Callaway and an advocate of sound fiscal practices which will benefit the entire city. I am always available to take a phone call from any citizen.

I would appreciate your confidence in reelecting me for another term to serve you.

Thank you.
